2008 Gewurztraminer

An interesting and individual wine which has helped create the Chatsfield brand. This style is generally fresh with ‘lifted’ fruit characters of lychee and Perfumed Rose Water.

After the birds and kangaroos decimated the 1 ha of vines, only 750kg of grapes were handpicked with lychee and rose characters. Crushed and pressed immediately the juice was allowed to settle for 36 hrs to clarify.

With such a small volume of juice (700L) it was decided to craft a unique wine through ‘barrel fermentation. The juice was then ‘racked’ (with light solids), warmed and inoculated with selected yeast.

Barrel fermentation (4 year old white barrels) and weekly stirring of the yeast lees is used to gain complexity whilst maintaining the lighter fruit characters of the elegant variety.
